Success is the Sum of Details. Chapter One.
The American Businessman Harvey S. Firestone, creator of the Firestone tires that bear his name, stated it in 1930: Success is the sum of details. This is particularly important in communication and I say it openly. We are always on the search for the “big event” and the “big things” and we forget about the little things, and it’s the little things that really matter the most at the end of the day. To honor the details, this will be a three-chapter miniseries. I’ll be glad to see you in chapter TWO.
Perhaps one of the things that is most difficult when preparing a presentation is the contents. Not because we don’t know what we have to present, or what we have to say, but because of how it is set up and how it is presented. To think about what you want to convey and what the audience should take away with them is crucial, and whether it is three minutes, or an hour, there must be a clear, well thought and defined outline.
If You Promise, Deliver
A simple rule, If you promise, deliver. It is very common when we are speaking and get relaxed throughout a presentation, that we get excited and promise things, which in the end never come. Taking care of the small details is essential. Your audience is the most important thing and it should always be kept in mind that each person counts.
In all our communication exercises we should always think about Plan B. That means being ready to react in case something goes very wrong at any time. And now what ?. Plan B is an important part of a good preparation. It makes you feel confident, helps the team to react quickly, and above all you convey the powerful feeling that you have things under control. Nothing better than being always well prepared.
Positive Language Improves Communication
On the subject of communication, positive language plays a fundamental role in getting the audience into action, since there is an important point of perception when communicating. Better to see the bottle half full, rather than half empty. An anecdote that illustrates the importance of how to face adverse situations with positive language. Perception is important at the time of engaging the audience.
Do it right, or don’t do it
It is not important to do the things right, but to do the things that have to be done, and for sure right. And in doing them right, there comes the option: Do it right or Don’t do it. The standards you set for yourself will define who you become. The value of your shares is that of your last show.
Improvising at the time it is to improvise, is perfect and adds value when done right. Improvising because of not being prepared, is simply disastrous.
